Is Garnier Cruelty Free and Vegan? (2024 Update)

Is Garnier cruelty free and vegan featured image

Garnier is 100% cruelty free. None of their ingredients and finished products are tested on animals.

However, Garnier is not 100% vegan as a brand because some of their products contain animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

If you want to learn more about this cruelty free brand, keep on reading.

And if you’re looking to update your beauty collection with some new Garnier products, make sure to check out the last section of this post where I’ve listed some of their best products.

Let’s dive right in!

Is Garnier cruelty free? Are Garnier products tested on animals?

Garnier doesn’t test on animals and is 100% cruelty free.

  • Garnier’s finished products aren’t tested on animals by anyone, anywhere in the world
  • The ingredients used in their products are never tested on animals by anyone, anywhere in the world
  • Third parties never test Garnier products on animals
  • Garnier is not sold in mainland China, or in any country where animal testing is still required by law

Garnier is certified cruelty free by Leaping Bunny, which is one of the strictest cruelty free certifications out there.

If you’re confused by the different cruelty free certifications and want to learn about the differences between them, check out my post Cruelty Free Certifications Explained: Who Can You Trust?.

Something really interesting:

When it comes to animal testing, Garnier has really been through a journey – they weren’t always cruelty free.

Until recently, Garnier products were being sold in mainland China. Even though China relaxed its animal testing requirements in January 2021, animal testing is still required by law for products sold there. Of course, that means that as long as Garnier products are sold there, they can’t be cruelty free.

However, I’m very happy to announce that Garnier made a decision to step in the right direction!

In March 2021, Garnier officially announced that they’ve finished their Leaping Bunny approval process and are now 100% cruelty free.

The Leaping Bunny program is the most respected and reputable cruelty free certification program, and is known as the international “gold-standard” of cruelty free products.

Why is Leaping Bunny so important in the eyes of consumers? Why do people trust this specific certification program so much?

Well, the answer is simple – Leaping Bunny has very strict requirements and doesn’t just rely on trusting brand statements, but instead they require proof and perform independent audits of the brands, checking their entire production process and supply chain for animal testing.

All Garnier products, globally, are now officially cruelty free – the brand has been given the stamp of approval by the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny programme, the leading organization working to end animal testing and the cruelty free gold standard.

So, how did Garnier get Leaping Bunny approved?

In order to get approved by the Leaping Bunny program, Garnier has worked with Cruelty Free International (the organization behind Leaping Bunny) for several months, collecting evidence to ensure that every single product and every single ingredient used by Garnier is free of animal testing.

During this process, they needed to get a declaration from more than 500 suppliers from all around the world, who source more than 3,000 different ingredients used within Garnier products.

Not only that, but in order to satisfy Leaping Bunny requirements Garnier has also agreed to recommit annually to ensure that they remain 100% free of new animal testing even if some of their suppliers, ingredients or manufacturing processes change.

I’m so glad that Garnier has been truly committed to putting an end to animal testing.

This is huge news!

Why is Garnier’s Leaping Bunny approval so important?

Garnier is a very popular and influential company, so we can hope that this inspires other brands to follow their lead and stop testing on animals.

In my opinion, Garnier’s story proves that going cruelty free and boycotting brands that test on animals actually helps raise awareness!

Boycotting brands that test on animals aims to force them to follow their ethical competitors’ example. By boycotting brands that test on animals, we’re going to help them see that we’re against animal testing and that animal welfare is important to us as their customers.

Buying cruelty free products also helps support the brands which have decided to put an end to animal cruelty. If we continue to support them, they’ll continue producing more cosmetics that are not tested on animals.

This consumer behavior sends a clear message to companies that they need to change their animal testing policies in order to be successful on the beauty market.

Is Garnier sold in China?

No, Garnier products are NOT sold in physical stores in mainland China.

Why can’t cruelty free brands sell in mainland China?

Animal testing is still happening for products sold in physical stores in mainland China.

Pre-market animal testing is required for all special-use imported products, and non-routine post-market testing on animals may also be done in cases of customer complaints.

However, please keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to products sold in stores at the airports, or in Hong Kong.

Also, products can be sold online and shipped to mainland China without being tested on animals.

Is Garnier owned by a parent brand? If yes, is it cruelty free?

Garnier is owned by L’Oréal, which is a company that tests on animals.

I have an entire dedicated post about L’Oréal’s cruelty free status and animal testing policy, so if you want to learn more, please check it out.

However, Garnier has their own animal testing policy independent of their parent company, so they remain 100% cruelty free.

Is Garnier vegan?

Garnier is not 100% vegan.

However, they do have some vegan products, which are appropriately labeled on the packaging and on their website.
