Let’s dive right in!

Is Rexona cruelty free? Are Rexona products tested on animals?

Rexona is NOT cruelty free.

Let’s review their official animal testing policy:

We are committed to eliminating animal testing. We do not test any of our products on animals, and most of our products reach consumers without any of their ingredients having been tested on animals.

Where some testing is required by law or currently unavoidable, we aim to minimise the number of animals involved. We will never compromise on the safety of our products.

Since the 1980s, our scientists have been at the forefront of research into non-animal approaches for testing product safety, collaborating with academics, governments and NGOs internationally.

We also work with local authorities to implement non-animal methods in countries which still undertake testing on products.

In order to be cruelty free, brands:

  • Must not test their finished products or ingredients on animals
  • Must make sure that their suppliers don’t test on animals
  • Must not commission third parties to test their products on animals
  • Must not sell their products in stores in mainland China, or other countries where animal testing is still required by law

However, as you can see from Rexona’s animal testing policy above:

  • Some ingredients used within Rexona products are tested on animals
  • Rexona states that animal testing is required by law or currently unavoidable for their products, which means their products are sometimes tested on animals. This refers to mandatory animal testing in mainland China, where Rexona products are sold.

Therefore, Rexona is not cruelty free.

Is Rexona sold in China?

Yes, Rexona is sold in mainland China where animal testing is still required.

This New York Times article explains the experiences of Rexona and other brands in the Chinese market.

BEIJING — Unilever brought its Rexona deodorant to China a decade ago, dreaming of a market with 2.6 billion armpits.

Why can’t cruelty free brands sell in mainland China?

Animal testing is still happening for products sold in physical stores in mainland China.

Pre-market animal testing is required for all special-use imported products, and non-routine post-market testing on animals may also be done in cases of customer complaints.

However, please keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to products sold in stores at the airports, or in Hong Kong.

Also, products can be sold online and shipped to mainland China without being tested on animals.

Is Rexona owned by a parent brand? If yes, is it cruelty free?

Rexona is owned by Unilever, a company that is not cruelty free.

In their animal testing policy, they explain their position regarding animal testing and their efforts to stop it.

Nevertheless, because Unilever sells their products in mainland China, they can’t be cruelty free because they agree to have their products tested on animals there in order to comply with Chinese regulations.

Unilever also owns other brands that aren’t cruelty free, including Dove and Axe, however, they also own some cruelty free brands such as Shea Moisture.

Is Rexona vegan?

Rexona is NOT 100% vegan.

Their products contain animal-derived ingredients or by-products, which is why this brand can’t be considered vegan.

Additionally, please keep in mind that I wouldn’t consider Rexona as a vegan-friendly brand because their products may be tested on animals in mainland China.
