The Face Shop is neither cruelty free, nor vegan. Their products are sold in stores in mainland China, so The Face Shop can’t be cruelty free.

On their website, they state that they’re against animal testing. However, The Face Shop never explicitly states that their products are not tested on animals.

They don’t have an animal testing policy published on their website.

Additionally, The Face Shop is neither PETA, nor Leaping Bunny certified.

Is The Face Shop vegan?

The Face Shop is not vegan. Some of their products contain animal-based ingredients.

Some examples include honey and beeswax, found in their foaming cleansers, mascara and face masks, to name a few.

Honey and beeswax are not vegan ingredients, since bees are exploited for the production of these ingredients.

Is The Face Shop vegetarian?

This brand is not vegetarian.

The Face Shop uses collagen in some of their products such as facial masks, eyeliner markers, etc.

Collagen is an animal-based ingredient, a protein usually derived from the skin, hair, nails, bones and ligaments of beef and fish.

Is The Face Shop sold in mainland China?

Yes, The Face Shop products are sold in mainland China.

Animal testing is still required by law for all products sold in mainland China, so The Face Shop can’t be cruelty free.

This is a screenshot from their website, where The Face Shop announces their expansion to the Chinese market.

Why can’t cruelty free brands sell in mainland China?

Animal testing is still happening for products sold in physical stores in mainland China.

Pre-market animal testing is required for all special-use imported products, and non-routine post-market testing on animals may also be done in cases of customer complaints.

However, please keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to products sold in stores at the airports, or in Hong Kong.

Also, products can be sold online and shipped to mainland China without being tested on animals.
