Is Maui Moisture Cruelty Free and Vegan? (2024 Update)

Is Maui Moisture cruelty free and vegan featured image

Maui Moisture is not cruelty free. This means that their products are tested on animals.

Maui Moisture products don’t contain animal-derived ingredients or by-products, so they meet the requirements to be vegan. However, because they are not cruelty free, I wouldn’t consider this brand as vegan-friendly.

To learn more about this brand and find out why they’re not cruelty free, keep on reading!

And if you’re looking for new cruelty free products to add to your hair care routine, make sure to check out the last section of this post where you’ll find some of the best Maui Moisture cruelty free alternatives.

Let’s dive right in!

Is Maui Moisture cruelty free? Are Maui Moisture products tested on animals?

Maui Moisture is NOT cruelty free.

In order to be cruelty free, brands:

  • Must not test their finished products or ingredients on animals
  • Must make sure that their suppliers don’t test on animals
  • Must not commission third parties to test their products on animals
  • Must not sell their products in stores in mainland China, or other countries where animal testing is still required by law

First, let’s look at this brand’s animal testing policy:

At MAUI MOISTURE®, we care deeply about the integrity of our products and our actions. When it comes to animal wellbeing, both MAUI MOISTURE® and our parent company share your concerns and believe that testing cosmetic and personal care products on animals should be obsolete. In fact, our parent company actively partners with research and advocacy organizations to advance alternative testing methods and the good news is that it’s working – there has been recent regulatory reform progress and we will continue to advocate for the acceptance of non-animal data globally. MAUI MOISTURE® products are not tested on animals and to reaffirm this policy, we have made an active decision to not sell MAUI MOISTURE® products in China, where regulations requiring animal testing exist. So far, so good – but that’s still not enough information to decide whether they’re cruelty free or not, so I reached out to this brand.

Their first reply was a little generic:

The Maui Moisture team wants to assure you that all Maui Moisture products are both vegan and cruelty-free. They are not sold in any market that tests on animals.

Additionally, they also referenced their above-mentioned animal testing policy.

However, I was persistent and finally got the following answer (I’ve bolded the important part):

The Johnson & Johnson Family of Consumer Companies does not conduct testing of our cosmetic or personal care products on animals and we do not ask others to test on our behalf, except when testing is required by law or specific government regulation. When it comes to the development of medicines, medical devices and other regulated health products, where animal use is often required, our policies reflect the highest animal welfare standards and meet or exceed all applicable local and national laws and regulations. So, as you can see in their answer above, third parties test Maui Moisture products or ingredients on animals when required by law or specific government regulation. Therefore, Maui Moisture is not cruelty free.

Is Maui Moisture sold in China?

Maui Moisture is not sold in mainland China where animal testing is still required.

Why can’t cruelty free brands sell in mainland China?

Animal testing is still happening for products sold in physical stores in mainland China.

Pre-market animal testing is required for all special-use imported products, and non-routine post-market testing on animals may also be done in cases of customer complaints.

However, please keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to products sold in stores at the airports, or in Hong Kong.

Also, products can be sold online and shipped to mainland China without being tested on animals.

Is Maui Moisture owned by a parent brand? If yes, is it cruelty free?

Maui Moisture is owned by Johnson & Johnson which is not a cruelty free company.

Is Maui Moisture vegan?

Maui Moisture products are vegan.

Their products don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

However, please note that since third parties may test Maui Moisture products on animals and are therefore not cruelty free, I wouldn’t consider them vegan-friendly.
